TXU Energy or Reliant or what

Ok. So every time someone could think of an energy service provider, it shall be either Reliant or TXU Energy. Most people who newly move to Texas have a hard time selecting the energy provider they want. So the most common question they ask is - Which one should I choose Reliant Energy or TXU Energy and they always receive a unanimous response to that - None. The fact is that there are just too many ignorant people out there who are really not aware of any of these Energy Providers.

Reliant is still better than TXU Energy and I have seen some good reviews by certain customers but maybe they haven't yet tried other better energy providing companies like GEXA is. These are your money savers. However, TXU Energy has never been very popular for its services / costs with the customers. But being a giant that it is, its still the most widely known energy provider.

Are Texas Energy Companies offering what you want?

Every Texas Energy Company has big claims on the kind of customer service they provide. But if you do have some time, I will suggest that you browse the net for a bit of information and you will get a lot of comments, reviews and posts / news item about how people are just too frustrated with the companies' customer service. When the price for energy is so high and cutting the electricity bills become just too difficult, it entirely comes down to customer service of our provider that shall keep our relationship intact.

Whether these companies are monitoring the social media platforms is really not known because I have hardly seen any comment by a company representative over a customer grievance. Recently, I came across a customer's frustration over Green Mountain Energy (one of the Energy providers in Texas). This guy complained about the company's customer service about 4 days ago. Obviously, he must have posted on the internet only after losing it to the company. But there was no comment by a company representative.

In the present era when social media has become a part and way of our lives, how could a business not attend to it. Infact, there are many businesses who have built themselves recently just because they came to know of their customer's demands, behavior, likings through social media channels on the internet.

This is a request and suggestion to all Texas Energy Companies to start monitoring their reputation on the internet if they haven't already done so. For the benefit of their business and satisfaction of their customers.

Homemade ways to cut your energy bills

Can you think of a family that do not use TV, Electric Heater, Air conditioning, Games, Iron, dish, network, washing machine, refrigerator, microwave and so on and so forth? I cant! Well but what do you do if you cant refrain from using the stuff but still infuriate every time you receive your energy bill? Ok, so here are some quick actions you could try:

Keep your windows and doors closed for maximum time so you block the sun and hence do not let the heat trap in.

Try box fan that draws cool air through the house at 79 deg. At night let a fan blow on you. Or in your room.

Try Cooking quick meals and cook more than just one. For next meal, you could actually just warm it up. Desist oven as much as you can.

Use vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce etc. that require no cooking.

Wash dishes by hand as much as you can. Use dishwasher as less as you can.

This is just Take 5 for today. Sadly, there is no magic that could cut your energy bills, its through our patience and resilience that could make us feel better the next time when that bloody bill falls in our mailbox.

No Solar Energy even in Sun

States like Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas don't use more Solar Energy even when its sunny most of the year. Why are these states not banking upon such a great and free resource is the most logical question at this moment.

As for anything, a major role played here is that of economics. Solar Energy set up involves just too much costs for the landlords who prefer to buy the conventional stuff at a much cheaper rate. Also, Arizona and Texas are among the poorest states in the US which means that set up cost means a lot.

Other than just the cost, one of Texas largest industries is oil. So, more emphasis is obviously on oil than on Solar energy. Irrespective of the fact that Solar Energy my be a better cleaner way to produce electricity. The first initiative has to be from the citizens' side wherein we as honest and sincere citizens have to find out our own ways of cutting down on the fossil fuel energy resources. Until that is done, solar energy have been and shall remain unused. Government, obviously, plays an important role and that is not to be mentioned. However an initiative from the citizen only can make a government do what is best in the long term benefit of the nation. It is only by government that "green companies" can actually flourish and a mass implementation of green tactics is possible.

Green energies like solar, wind, and geothermal will always be small because they are not well represented in politics. The Obama government, however, has certain initiatives laid out and we hope that they are well followed and would really like to see them succeed.

Energy Efficiency for Big Windows

If you are living in an old house with big windows, energy efficiency could be a problem. Especially during Texan summers they could really trap heat and eat up most of your air conditioning. So what is the best solution that you have apart from replacing these windows with new ones which is least viable and especially when you do not want to do away with the antique air of your house.

The first solution that would strike the mind is to that the windows are properly sealed. For this, you may use external shutters or heavy "night curtains" at peak sun times during the day. The same shutters could be used in the winters to trap the heat. But considering that you do not want to block the light coming through these windows and also installing such shutter may be a bit of expensive, this solution may not really fix your problem.

Another alternative could be to caulk the inside and outside mouldings. There are several companies that sell a clear plastic that goes inside of your entire window and seals it off to all drafts and some of the heat. But again may be you are looking for a much cheaper alternative and not a consultation from a company.

From the home made stuff and a much cheaper idea would be to use plastic. Try using a simple frame the same size as the window so that it would fit the window from the inside. You could then cover this frame with plastic. This way you could even take it or remove it whenever you wish. Apparantly this will be the cheapest alternative for you and worth trying.

Covering your window with a sheet of clear vinyl is another good idea.

Most Common Alternative Energy Source in Texas

There are more than 2 energy sources in Texas as per common perception. Most people would generally believe that Natural Gas and Coal are the only energy sources. Some smart people may however add Wind and Nuclear Energy too. However there are more energy sources in Texas than these four. As far as I could research, I was able to get the data for 2006. Here are some details:

* Natural Gas: 49.0%
* Coal: 36.5%
* Nuclear: 10.3%
* All Other Renewable Energy Sources: 2.0% (like biomass, geothermal, solar, wind, ocean thermal, wave action and tidal action.)
* Other Gases: 1.2% (manufactured gas, coke-oven gas, blast-furnace gas and refinery gas.)
* Petroleum: 0.4%
* Hydroelectric: 0.2%

Hydroelectric is supposed to be the cheapest of all and proves to be mor efficient and green than anything else.

Turning the power on first day in Texas

Many people are worried about getting power during the first day of the application. This is generally a hassle for those who move to a new house. At this point a major concern is to look for a Texas Energy provider that shall turn power on the day of application.

Under normal circumstances (as is generally observed) it is at least in a week that you could get someone out. So you need to be careful and plan ahead well in advance because the whole process takes time. Within a week is the best that it could go. It may also depend on your priority - is it money or is it haste of getting it. The problem here is that if you contract with an energy provider that would turn on the power very first day, you need to make sure if the energy rates are competitive to other energy suppliers. You dont want to contract with someone on a long term just because you want the power that very day. so most people would still prefer a cheaper contract / better energy rates.

It appears that since American Electric Power or AEP is responsible for turning the power on, it naturally should take some time for the process. There is a lot of information with AEP for the areas they serve. You may also want to check them out before finalizing your Electric provider in Texas.

Texas Energy Company stands out

Energy rates reduction by Bounce Energy, a Texas electric company is the hottest news in the energy sector right now. And why not, it seems to offer so much to its consumers as incentives that I am sure they must be swarmed with new customers (not to mention tying up the old ones more firmly). This is believed to be the 7th time in 9 months and the reduction is as low as 8% this time. I believe such incentives are the need of the hour when every customer is asking for more. In their pursuit of offering value in terms of various marketing initiatives and product development, a point comes when the companies are not left with much to innovate. At this point, most of the companies would be running almost the same services at almost equal price that it becomes quite difficult for the customer to understand which one is better and signing up with one is as good as signing up with anyone else.

However, companies like Bounce Energy hit the shot with an immediate incentive program and a fixed plan that not only gives its customers extra value but also ensure a relationship of a few months. I think as the competition in the energy sector of Texas grow further, it will become more difficult for the companies to stand out from the crowd.

Renewable Energy Rates in Texas

GreenChoice by Austin Energy may not be the best solution for your energy needs after all. This is clear since the energy rates in Texas have been going down and GreenChoice, which offers energy from renewable means of Sun and Wind, proves to just be more expensive. GreenChoice helps customers decide whether a lock in electricity contract period of 5 yrs would be more suitable or would a 10 yr contract do more good. As it turns out, in its most recent offering of renewable energy units, about 99 percent of the allotment has gone unsold.

Consider this - a 5-year subscription to GreenChoice costs 8.0 cents per kWh, while a 10-year subscription comes with a charge of 9.5 cents per kWh.

Now, the regular residential rate for conventional electricity is 3.75 cents per kWh for the first 500 kWh, and 6.02 or 7.82 cents thereafter, for winter and summer months respectively.

It is lesser for large commercial users - about 1.5 cents per kWh.

GreenChoice is the arm of Austin Energy for renewable energy resource. The basic problem is that while Austin Energy’s main business is selling power from coal and gas plants that they own, GreenChoice competes with that only.

Falling Energy Rates in Texas

Natural gas rates are falling continuously in Texas. And many investors and financial consultants would believe that this is just the right time to start buying and investing in the area. Natural gas is continuing its bearish march because of several reasons collectively contributing to its price fall.

The Gasoline prices have fallen to almost 20 cents over the past month in Texas. The statewide average cost has come down to $2.31 a gallon from $2.34 just within a week. Houston, Fort Worth and Amarillo have the most inexpensive gas @ $2.28. Even the highest rates (in El Paso) are at $2.45. Austin is midway at $2.34 a gallon which is still below 3 cents from last week. Compare these rates with those during 2008 - $3.94 a gallon and you will realize the dip yourself.

The low demand is keeping the gasoline and heating oil at their highest levels in 24 years. This low demand again is a resultant of few important reasons. Consumption has cut down by 36% from January to April. The temperature this summer has been moderate so demand for natural gas was obvious to go down. As a result, the stockpiles have been growing. Additionally some new fields are doing fairly well in production terms, thus, only adding to the stocks. So simple economics say that while demand has slowed down and production is on a high. Naturally, prices have to go down.

Energy Rates and Energy Costs

The energy department reveals the average US home spending on electricity / energy to be about $2000 per year. The break up of this cost could well be analyzed by the following:
Heating & Cooling: 50%
Water Heating: 25%
Appliances and Home electronics: 20%
Lighting: 15%

Since the energy costs are on a rise and the dynamics attached to this market is not in control of a common home, the best one can do is to cut down energy costs by taking a bit more precautionary approach towards the use of the energy utilizing items. One of the best ways to do that is to switch to energy saving appliances and get rid of the old technology which are not as energy efficient as the new ones. Look out for energy star-labeled models. Also, switching off the appliances, lights, computers, TV and other gadgets, when not in use is a great idea to restrict your energy bills.

Though the government makes every effort on a large scale to provide efficient energy, it ultimately comes down to consumers who need to pay the bill for what they use. The energy costs for your home can only cut down if YOU want them to. When you use energy it passes a load to the electricity Grid which the authorities have to maintain as per the consumers demand in order to offer non-stop electricity and to better manage the grid from falling off. For this maintenance, the energy department needs new technology always which comes at a cost. This cost is ultimately passed over to the consumers. So when you are wasting energy or using it excessively, you are not only increasing your energy bills but are also contributing towards higher energy rates. So, during the next wave, the rates will go high which in turn would increase your overall bills even further.

Plant Trees and Save Energy

Several studies have revealed that Trees could help you cut down your energy costs. Well yes, thats the truth. We all know how important trees are to sustain the natural environment. Consider the fact that tree is a heaven if you are in a tiringly sunny place. Standing under the tree and sipping cola under a cruel sun. Tree no doubt helps beating the heat and have been traditionally and historically a place for foot-travelers to rest under brutal sweat.

A study shows that mature trees properly placed around buildings can reduce air-conditioning needs by 30 percent and heating needs by 20 percent. Another study shows that planting one young tree on the west side of your home can cut energy costs by 3 percent within five years, and nearly 12 percent within 15 years. So look out for your west side. See if you can clear up some space for planting a tree and saving on energy.

But the question is it takes some time for the trees to mature so your best bet will be to plant those trees that grow faster. Generally deciduous trees will do more good. Trees that offer shade like maples etc but since it mostly depends on the climate you live in, may be it will be better if you consult an arborist regarding that.

Exelon - NRG association not possible.

In a recent development to the Exelon bid for Texas Power Company NRG,has been fought to bring it to end by NRG management. Ans so has ended the long proxy fight. This was the effect of NRG's management writing a note to its shareholders which talked about undervaluing the power company. NRG claimed to have its share value from $36 to $42 while Exelon valued it at $26. The offer is said to have equaled about $7.5 billion.

Exelon CEO John Row said that its time to move on for strengthening Exelon's stand-alone opportunities. With this ends the Exelon - NRG Saga.

Electric Rates in Texas are Falling

The electric rates in Texas are the most amicable in the present days. A major reason is the price of Natural Gas which is the major source of electricity in Texas. The Natural Gas prices have fallen by around 40% since the start of this year and this has had a positive effect on electricity rates and a good thing for all electricity buyers.

This seems to be the best time to rework your electricity contracts and bids as companies are offering plans below 12 cents per kilowatt-hour. So while you may have been well bound with a provider on a higher bill rate earlier, this is the time to rework it. As it turns out, some people found it economical to switch a provider and pay for the cancellation charges with the existing provider than to continue with it till the term ends. Some people could negotiate rate with their existing providers and struck a better deal that save them a no of $$$.

The energy rate at present could go anywhere down to 10 cents per kwh. The savings are really important to all of us in such times. A dollar saved is like a dollar earned. It is hence logical to rework your contract sheets and take out time, save some hundreds.

Ethanol Vs Natural Gas

Energy Independence is high on agenda in the US government list but as Mr Bryce observes, the recent activities / actions are taking us to an opposite direction rather than moving towards the sought independence. Mr Bryce's concern is over the US energy politics and debate over the cap-and-trade legislation that recently passed the house. He records that while Natural gas and oil produces about 98 times more energy than Ethanol in US, Ethanol gets around 190 times more subsidies.

Further, the new bill seeks to remove subsidies from drilling which may mean and increased cost of Natural Gas. Growth Energy which is an ethanol industry front-group, is pushing the Environmental Protection Agency to adopt a proposal that would increase the amount of ethanol blended into gasoline from the current maximum of 10% to as much as 15%. It is believed that even 10% ethanol is doing more harm than good as evident from Toyota's calling back of around 0.2 million vehicles back.

The removal of incentives on drilling is not the exact way to achieve an energy independence since that infact would mean less production and hence more imports. Robert Bryce with his book "Gusher of Lies: The Dangerous Delusions of 'Energy Independence'", is trying to a prove a point to Mr Obama and allies.

Lower Electric Rates in Texas right now

Choosing the right electricity retailer is not as difficult as to know when to choose one. The price of electricity is largely dependent upon the Natural Gas price. So the first thing to understand is when could the Natural Gas prices increase that will affect your electricity bills. The price is also coupled by Government policies or any other unforseen circumstances. For the unforseen, there is no way out. But there is definitely a data for Natural Gas price changes. A better way to do is to look at the historical trend of change in electricity price.

Natural Gas price would be higher when the demand is higher. So, we can easily assume that it shall be in the winter months that the Natural Gas prices go up. Consequently, the electricity rates also rise. Jerry Dyess of Chooseenergy.com recommends locking a contract during Fall months. The historical trend of electricty is divided in to peak and shoulder season. Fall comes under the shoulder season when most electric retailers will be selling off at lower prices.

After you decide for bidding during a fall season, the rates comparison for different electricity providers can be done through many websites on the internet. But that is not a wise thing to do. The best way is to hire an electricity consultant or better still an aggregator that shall help evaluate bids for you, assess the legal language of the contracts. Further, it is also advisable to lock for not more than 36 months. Generally it should be 12 or 24 months so that the contract ends only in the Fall months when the electricity rates are again down so you have a chance of a new better deal and renegotiation.

Not only is "how much to pay" important but also important is "when to pay" and "what to pay". I think the time is ripe for some low electric rates shopping in Texas.

Exelon raises bid for Texas Power Company

NRG is the second-biggest power producer in Texas. Exelon Corp. is the largest U.S. utility owner by market value and based in Chicago. Once upon a time, not long back, Exelon Corp proposed a takeover of NRG by swap 0.485 share of Exelon for each NRG share. The bid was rejected and ever since Exelon Corp has been working out the possibilities. Following this, Exelon took the offer directly to NRG shareholders and in June this year it nominated nine independent directors for board seats.

In a recent development, Exelon has increased the proposed bid to 0.545, a 12% increase. According to Exelon this is the best and their final offer. The hike was reasoned for identifying cost savings and accounting for NRD's purchase this year for RRI energy.

Expert, however, believe that the bid has been good if it were equal or above the 0.58 levels.

Exelon indicated that the earnings per share would increase by as much as 7 percent in 2012 and beyond. The company expect cost savings of around $475 million including $20 million at the Texas retail unit and a 30 percent reduction in operations and maintenance costs at NRG.

NRG is was selected by the U.S. Energy Department for government loan guarantees to back new nuclear plants but Exelon do not have any plans of a nuclear plant.

The bidding and takeover process is always interesting. Lets see what turns out in this case.

Energy from Carbon Dioxide

If you did not know how Ethanol can produce energy, it is sad. Prior to 2006 it was believed that energy produced from Ethanol is less than what is needed to produce ethanol itself! This was a part of controversy in USA where the major source of ethanol was corn. Corns have to be cultivated before extracting ethanol from them and eventually energy derived from Ethanol.

But in 2006 deeper studies indicated that actually Ethanol produced energy almost twice of what was required to obtain it. Thus ending the controversy.
The study also indicated that corn ethanol actually reduces petroleum use by about 95 percent per gallon of fuel. It also reduces greenhouse gas emissions by about 13 percent. So why not use Ethanol or other biodiesel after all and save the environment.

Well, in the US alone, out of the total transportation fuel, ethanol accounts for about 2% (as of 2006). Ethanol powers Brazil's major road transportation.


"The U.S. Department of Energy aims to replace 30 percent of the liquid petroleum transportation fuel with biofuels by 2025."


Now, lets say we find an alternative to produce ethanol than just corn. Lets say that we devise the technology of producing ethanol (and hence energy) from something we wish could reduce like CO2 (Carbon Dioxide). Wouldn't it be great to see a cycle that looked like:



No doubt this is one great achievement. We could for an extent:
a. Use renewable source of energy permanently and leave petroleum, coal and other non-renewables for more important work.
b. Limit greenhouse gases and thus global warming, the biggest challenge today.
c. Get the environment a lot cleaner than what is it today.

So here is the news: this is something that "The Dow Chemical Co. will partner with a Florida-based company to turn carbon dioxide -- the most prevalent greenhouse gas -- into ethanol."

The ethanol is secreted by Algae which is captured by these companies. Apparantly, they have been using ethanol produced through these methods for making plastics. The project undertaken by the company claims to use around 2 tons of CO2 daily. This method produces around 6000 gallons of ethanol per acre land as opposed to cane ethanol which gives out just 400 gallons.

As the project matures, we sincerely hope this is scaled commercially.

Smarter Faster Power Grids in Making

The Department of Energy is unlocking a good $3.3 B to companies and utilities in pursuit of developing a smarter and faster power grid. This is a really nice and rational step. The stimulus grants come with a cap of US$ 200 M which is still a handsome amount as compared to previously proposed $ 20 M. Now that is one hike. 20 was not expected to make any significant appreciable changes to the grid and that may be one reason to inflate it to 200, which should hopefully do the job.

This new smart grid will be able to "automatically measure the amounts and peak times of a homeowner’s or business’ actual electricity consumption. This shall even detect outages and problems and electronically notify utilities, and perhaps even store power during off-peak hours to be used during times of higher demand" as noted by Business First

The new National Standards of this smart grid products and technologies should be out by the end of the year.

It is definitely going to change an individual's as well as a company's future.

What is the so talked Waxman-Markey bill?

Chairman Henry A. Waxman of the Energy and Commerce Committee and Chairman Edward J. Markey of the Energy and Environment Subcommittee drafted a clean energy legislation in March 2009 that had certain very important subject matters addressed. The Bill claimed that it will create jobs, help end the US's dependence on foreign oil, and fight and tackle global warming.

This began to be known as The American Clean Energy and Security Act. The legislation itself had four titles:

Clean Energy: Renewable Energy Sources promotion, low-carbon fuels, clean electric vehicles, the smart grid and electricity transmission, and carbon capture and sequestration technologies, ;
Energy Efficiency: Increasing energy efficiency across all sectors of the economy, including transportation, appliances, buildings, and industry;
Global Warming: Limiting emissions of heat-trapping pollutants; and
Transitioning: Transition to a clean energy and in the process create green jobs and protect interests of U.S. consumers and industry.

The above bill seems to be all positive and encouraging as it seems, however, recently some Texas businesses have shown worries and have felt uncertain about climate change bill. These business are the Airlines, Ranch owners in Texas etc.

Some business like the Railroad giant BNSF Corp., based in Fort Worth feel that the bill is too complex. John Fainter, the president of the Texas Association of Electric Companies has indicated worries about the bill too. His organization is of the belief that the bill is "certain to mean higher costs for consumers."

Whether the Waxman Markey Bill would successfully address the concerns of these troubled businesses is yet to be seen.

Electricity and Cars

It seems that the competition in electric cars will soon be the next big race for companies. Just when ZENN Motor Co declares its plan for a better energy technology for cars , its the turn of ExxonMobil, the oil and gas behemoth.

ExxonMobil is all set to back up Electrovaya with around $500,000 investment on their electric car project - the Altcar. Electrovaya is a low-speed electric vehicle maker making a larger push for vehicle technology. The team seems to work out a fuel efficiency through synthetic blends and lightweight plastics unlike Texas based EEStor which intends on better battery technology.

The car that Electrovaya intends to launch with these joint endeavors is Maya 300. The launch is scheduled for 2011 and a 4 seater Maya 300 may cost anywhere around US$ 25000. Now this is not a highway capable elctric vehicle like other companies are planning to launch. It seems electrovaya have their own strategy with these low speeders.

Though there are many other companies getting funded for their plug-in vehicles and ready to launch in the next few years, the biggest rivalry may come from China-based automakers like BYD Auto.

Where is The Texas Energy Planning Council?

In late November 2003, Governor Perry signed for the initiation of a Government body that would keep a check on every energy need in Texas called the Texas Energy Planning Council. This was a great initiative as was recognized at that time mainly because the council was supposed to be a step towards creating efficient energy resources, cleaner energy technologies and to keep Texas ahead of any other state or country in terms of energy production or energy regulation.

The council's birth was actually a good step in this direction because deregulation in 2002 had anyways led to a major competitive force of energy companies flocking Texas like anything. There are hundreds of retail energy providers, energy consultants and energy brokers right now in Texas. A governing body that could help Texas utilize the resources to a maximum was actually necessary and this happened by the launch of TEPC.

One of the key roles of TEPC was also to check the gaps between the energy demand and supply in Texas. The last Texas Energy Plan that we see anywhere on the internet was in 2005 by Victor Carrillo, the Chairman of the Railroad commission of Texas and also of the TEPC. But after 2005, there seems to be no news of TEPC anywhere on the internet. Even the TEPC pages on the TEPC website is updated only till Dec 2004. I wonder if they have disappeared into thin air!

The Energy Bill encourages clean energy technologies.

The energy bill that was approved by Senate last week approves and includes money for clean energy technologies. This is really great and something that was needed in the age of global warming. However, there is still one thing which the bill lacks and something which has become very essential - mandatory reductions in emissions of heat-trapping gases. Unless a reduction is sought for such gases, we may not be able to stop the dangerous warming threats.

By 2021, the bill instructs utilities to produce up to 15 percent of electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar power. The bill is found to be designed to combat carbon pollution threatening the planet.

The bill is being said to be a compromise between the Democrats and Republicans. And this is good specially when it is serving the interests of both the parties. While the Democrats seek to reduce energy use and emissions linked to global warming, the Republicans are more keen on increasing production of oil, gas and nuclear power. I specially like this approach mainly because the interests do not clash and both the parties have resolved to only strengthen the bill.

Its all about Energy – The ‘intel inside’ of cars.

Ian Clifford is the founder and CEO of Toronto based ZENN Motor Co. As he reveals in an interview with Michael Vaughan on what it takes to start a revolution is very motivating and the next generation stuff.

ZENN Car which expands as Zero Emissions No Noise is betting upon a unique energy storage device from EEStor, a Texas based company! ZENN has about 500 cars on the road right now. These are all electric mostly in the places with low speed regulations and travel about 60 Kms on an 8 hour charge. ZENN is looking out to increasing it to 400 Kms with the help of EEStor. As revealed from his interview, Ian seems to be an energy passionate guy who is really keen to working out a never-seen-before item very soon to hit the roads and thus, solving the pollution problem for once and for all.

When asked whether they are improving the battery, Ian replies that yes, it has nothing to do with the cars but its all about energy storage. The focus of EEStor’s technology is to create a battery that can store energy for a relatively longer period of time.
Ian is positive that even battery companies has no clue about a 50 KWH of energy storage in a car. The ultra capacitor technology by EEStor is the key to the whole project and Ian is very optimistic with a firm belief in EEStor.

He says “But we don't want to be in the car-building business. We've used the Intel model — our idea is that our drive system becomes kind of ubiquitous. The Intel inside of the car.”

EEStor is in Austin Texas and have a state-of-the-art production facility that's ready to deliver production units in 2009.

Do Energy Providers or Government have a solution to Greenhouse Gases?

What greenhouse gases are and how could they affect the atmosphere is now very commonly known even to a school going child of Grade III. This was important because I guess it would have been cruel to pass something harmful to your generation without a notice. So they have to prepare themselves for 'some' of our careless and reckless behavior.

Greenhouse gases started to be known from the 19th century when Tyndall put forth his theories. Since then, these have only been increasing and the main sources are the fossil fuels. Its rising on an average rate of 1.8% annually. That looks like a conversion rate for pretty cool business on the internet. There are gases in the environment from ever since and there are some that are human made like ChloroFluoro Carbons. The industrialization and economic growth has led to increased demand for energy and the biggest source of energy as we all know are the fossil fuels. Incidentally Fossil fuels are the highest emitters of these greenhouse gases that will keep us sweltering one day, round the year.

Almost all electricity producing companies use fossil fuels like Natural gas, Petroleum and coal to produce electricity and that is the reason they have a 40% share in increasing the greenhouse gases globally. US alone has 85% share in all the greenhouse gases. The energy usage is only rising every day especially in the developing countries. So while USA may have restrained itself and implemented Greenhouse gas checks, the developing countries are not in a mood to do so simply because they do not want to be left behind in the age of globalization and development.

The top five emitters of greenhouse gases are all in the energy production business using fossil fuels. Even when Uranium is known to emit considerably less green house gases during energy production, fossil fuels still remain the best way to produce energy. However, many alternative sources of energy are being explored around.

Who is to be blamed is not known - people want energy and cant live without it, Producers are producing energy through fossil fuels, government is working out for alternative methods. Energy producers and government together can reach out a point where they can minimize greenhouse gas emissions to a considerable extent. For instance, government should encourage producers for alternative energy sources and should restrain the use of fossil fuels.

A recent study stated that U.S. energy companies invested $58.4 billion from 2000 to 2008 in technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The amount is 44% of the total investment in US. Responsible for 40% emissions, energy producers are being very calculative

Reliant Energy - Endeavors towards better Summer.

I was comparing the Annual Summer Program of Reliant Energy of 2008 to 2009 and incidentally there is something that I noticed.

Reuters mention in their 2008 release of Reliant Summer Program that "In Texas, the company provides service to approximately 1.8 million retail electricity customers, including residential and small business customers and commercial, industrial, governmental and institutional customers."

In 2009 release it is - "Reliant Energy provides electricity and energy services to more than 1.7 million retail customers-including homes, small and large businesses, manufacturing facilities, government entities and institutions across Texas."

This makes me wonder if Reliant lost 0.1 million customers in the past year. Though, the figures will be a close approximation to actuals, however, it would have looked better if the approximations too increased with the actual customer base. For one, I really feel good about the Summer Program that Reliant launches very year.

While the Summer initiatives of 2008 were limited to only "Beat the Heat" centers, this year, they have only diversified this program to another initiative - "Heat Relief Family Fun". Who ever said that power supply is a boring subject to think about any innovation are wrong. I pretty much like these initiatives by Reliant. Such initiatives serves all -
a. government initiatives for energy conservation since many consumers flicking these centers would only mean that energy is being saved when not used at home.
b. consumers are also satisfied since they do not have to think of ways to reduce their energy bills.
c. Reliant also benefits by earning money through these centers as also it is a great way of branding oneself.

Though complete program details for Heat Relief Family Fun would only be exposed during the end of this month, here is an overview that has been released by Reliant Energy for its critical care customers that includes seniors, lower income groups:

Cool Way to Stay Cool Community Event - Reliant Energy is presenting a free program in Dallas and Houston this summer, offering entertainment and skating fun for families who have decided to save money by taking a "stay-cation" close to home this summer.

Discounted Family Fun Tickets ─ Reliant Energy will offer discounted tickets online for visits to local museums, waterparks or other entertainment venues. This is a great way to promote activities that Reliant likes. So it could enter tie-ups with museums, waterparks and such entertainment venues in return for branding or probably a corporate / industrial contract.

I would say this is a perfect example of Nash Equilibrium.

Retail Electricity for Dallas Fortworth Airport

If you have been wondering who just bagged the contract for electricity supplies to Dallas FortWorth Airport, it is none other than Champion Energy Services LLC. I greatly admire Champion Energy Services especially since last year when I got to know that their annual revenues went sky high. (US$ 350m). Now, this is really something for a company with just about 70 employees.

Anyway, Champion is now the proud owner of the contract which it won in a reverse auction. Champion Energy is a houston company and is one of the top 5 unaffiliated retail electric suppliers. The bid closed at 5.925 cents per kilowatt-hour. Currently, the suppliers for the airport are Texas General Land Office and Houston-based Reliant Energy.

Champion Energy boasts of embracing deregulation and creating value for its customers.They have a peak load of about 1000 megawatts.

Dallas Fortworth International Airport is the world’s third-busiest airport. Apparantly, this new electricity and green energy contract was purchased through World Energy Exchange, operated by World Energy Solutions in Worcester, Mass. While DFW has done this, other airports too are after such green energy initiatives.

Vertical Axis Wind Turbine in Texas

To your left is an image of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine. The other form is rather commonly known and is the Horizontol Axis Wind Turbine. Both the forms derive energy from wind by same basic principles of physics but they sure do act in different ways. And one form has advantages over the others.

Recently, a VAWT has been erected at West Texas A&M University at Canyon. A Fort Worth-based renewable energy solutions company is behind this idea.

Luckily for them, and unlucky for many of the electricity customers in Texas who faced power outage, the Turbine moved its blade owing to the Texas thunderstorm. Though it is still not known about the level of noise that it may create but surely things would be done to keep them to a minimum. Technologists are always working on it. The main reason behind that is because the first Texas VAWT has been erected in an Urban area. Another area of exploration in the coming months would be the level of energy efficieny we are going to get with the new machine.

The Texas based energy company that has made this possible is a start up by the name of Skydrill (suitable name!). Though, the machine is still under testing phase, Skydrill is sure they will soon bag Target Corp as their first customer.

Being a Wind Energy Company or a Solar Energy Company is a thing of the past now, what is being more stressed upon and what really is more important is being a Renewable Energy Company. While the non-renewable sources of energy have rendered the prices to drill the sky, I am sure companies like Skydrill would be a relief for many of us.

Inevitable Power Outages

Even today while the world has entered into 21st century, uninterrupted power supply is yet to be accomplished on a 100% level. It is only the natural calamities that are unexpected and take off the authorities by the collar, out of the blues. No matter how good services we offer and no matter how technological advancements we make, nature would still stand higher to mankind.

Last week the power outage in North Texas due to a storm rendered 245,000 electricity customers sit in the dark. Though the American companies are very active in handling such unforeseen situations, the people too show resilience during such times as these. Due to heavy wind and rain, many trees fell down and power lines knocked.

The power restoration was being done by Oncor power company. Oncor Power company is a unit of Energy Future Holding. Energy Future Holdings operates 3 business divisions:

1. TXU Energy, a competitive electricity retailer;
2. Luminant, a competitive power generation business; and
3. Oncor, a regulated power distribution and transmission business.

Oncor employed extra crew for power restoration , but heavy rains and lighting kept them restrained for a while.

While this is a scene of 1 out 365 days in North Texas, some places in India RECEIVE power for 1 day out of 365! Can you believe there are still a lot of interior villages in India that are deprived of energy resources. There primary source of energy is Wood and Sun. But that doesnt suffice, does it?

The contrast in the living standards keeps me wondering sometime.

Energy Rates on a rise.

The Energy Department's Energy Information Administration predicted on Tuesday that consumers will be paying a national average of $2.70 a gallon by July, before prices level off. In California the price is already $3 per gallon. In this recession hit economy the worst fear is the rising cost - when you got to pay more than what you have been doing. Energy costs almost 6% of American consumer spending and that is what shall keep the people off road.

The rising fuel prices, gas and other sources of energy give a tough time to all directly related companies like Shipping and Trucking companies. However, no one is spared. Due to unemployment and high energy cost, many people would rather stay inside than go out and spend on fuel.

So, what is your strategy this summer to save yourself from spending this extra? Would you save less or would you spend less? I mean whatever it is, the rising energy cost makes one believe that there is no turnaround from such economic conditions soon. It is still gonna be an era before we take a sigh of relief.

A possible way out is to lock your energy price for a year or two. TXU energy lets you do that. There are other utilities that offer you to pay bills in equal installments over the course of the year instead of dealing with huge swings in air conditioning and heating bills. Will you take this gamble?
